The Japanese Connection: Pride Back on Track

2006 has been a tough year for the organisation, but finally Pride FC have got some news to feel good about. Accusations of Japanese Mafia connections lead to the show loosing it’s Fuji TV deal earlier on I the year. But now, partly due to Pride’s success in North America and partly due to the fact that they are planning a bigger than usual end of year extravaganza, Pride now have got three major Japanese TV stations fighting over the show. Free TV coverage is a vital for Pride, in the same way Spike TV’s coverage is instrumental in the UFC’s boom. More good news for the company is that sponsors are queuing round the block to support the show in the future. Pride President Nobuyuki Sakakibara said (translated): “Before The Real Deal we had three sponsors, and after the show we have ten more interested sponsors.” Major backing in terms of sponsorship money and a “free TV” deal come as a very welcome breath of fresh air for the company after suffering such a tumultuous year. |
