Kestutis Smirnovas hints at “Jacket” match

The man who has replaced Kazushi Sakuraba in the Hero’s Light-Heavyweight Tournament held a public workout for the media yesterday.

Kestutis Smirnovas, who notoriously took Sakuraba apart with his hands before getting subbed by Armbar in the first round of the tournament, displayed his notorious striking skills for all present… including his forthcoming opponent’s striking coach!

After the demonstration, Smirnovas told the assembled media that although he has strengths in punching, his background is actually in Judo in which he has been training for fifteen years. Acknowledging his opponent’s Judo prowess he commented on how interesting it could be if he were to wear a Judo Gi in his match, just as his opponent Yoshihiro Akiyama traditionally does.

"He wears the Judo Gi, and I may wear the Gi to fight now, too."
