Change at the top for Cage Warriors

The Cage Warriors Fighting Championships are sad to announce that the current CWFC Middleweight Champion Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann has decided to relinquish his Title due to his current commitments with the Ultimate Fighting Championships. (UFC)

Kampmann first came to the attention of UK fans in 2003, when he defeated Dave Jones at XFC 2 in Cornwall.  He then featured next in the UK at House of Pain 2, some 18 months later, where he defeated Matt Ewin via TKO, when Ewin could not come out for the 2nd round due to injury.  That performance along with a stunning first round KO of the American Brendan Sequin at KOTC UK in June 2005; prompted the Cage Warriors team to bring in Kampmann as a replacement for the injured Damien Riccio at Cage Warriors Strike Force 2: Uk vs the World in July 2005.  On that night Kampmann once again faced Matt Ewin, who put his CWFC Middleweight Title on the line.  However Kampmann was once again victorious and defeated Ewin via verbal submission in round 1 after landing some big elbows strikes on the Englishman by the cage.

Kampmann then featured in the biggest Cage Warriors show to date, when he defeated Damian Riccio at Strike Force 4: Night of Champions with a dominant performance, which was sealed when Kampmann managed to lock-on a rear naked choke in round 2 against the rugged French striker.

Kampmann was due to defend his Title at Strike Force 5 against Gregory Bouchelaghem, but injury prevented him from doing so and after several months off, Kampmann went to the USA to train and sharpen up his game at the Xyience Training Centre in Las Vegas, Nevada.  It was there, where Kampmann was lucky enough to get an 11th hour call up for the re-launched WFA show in California, where he defeated Edwin Aguilar via TKO midway through round 1.

Such was the impact of this victory; Kampmann was soon approached by the UFC to fight on their “Fight Night” show on Spike TV.  Although Kampamnn featured on the non-televised undercard, he racked up another impressive victory by submitting fellow Muay Thai specialist Crafton Wallace with a rear naked choke.

These fine performances in the saw Kampmann’s status skyrocket and as a result he found himself unable to defend his CWFC Title on the 19th November and as a result he decided to unselfishly hand back the Title so that he could concentrate on his UFC career.
When asked for a quote Kampamnn told cagewarriors.com that “Due to my obligations in the UFC, I’m giving up my title in CW so other fighters can have the opportunity to fight for it.  It’s always been a pleasure fighting at CW and maybe I can comeback and fight the new champ one day in the future.  Thanks to all the friends and fans watching and supporting me and thanks to CW for having me at their shows.”

Cage Warriors would like to add that it has been a pleasure to have such a fine athlete as Martin Kampmann compete on their shows and that he has been a fine and worthy Champion.  Everyone at the CWFC wishes Martin all the very best in his future career and hopes that one day in the future he will return to fight in Cage Warriors.

As a result there will be a CWFC Middleweight Title fight at Cage Warriors: Showdown 2 on the 19th November at the Octagon Centre, Sheffield.  The participants for this Title bout will be announced soon, but it is hoped that Martin Kampmann will be able to attend the show and give the CWFC Middleweight Title to the winner.
