Ultimate Fight Night 5
Date submitted: 29 June 2006
Author: Sean McClure for MaxFighting

Gurgel and Hominick let their hands go with precision and speed. I was impressed by Jorge's boxing and in my opinion he had the better striking overall. In the first round Gurgel opened up Hominick's nose with some great jabs. Mark countered with some impressive shots of his own. In the second round, more of the same. Hominick ate a head kick from Jorge and then leg wept him to the canvas. This happened twice and couple that with some good striking I think Hominick did take the second round on the scorecard. The third round was owned by Jorge as he pressed the fight and landed some very nice leg kicks and powerful striking. Hominick and Gurgel were even in the first round, Hominick took the second, and Jorge took the third. The decision could have gone either way, but in the end it was a unanimous decision for the very tough lightweight fighter and winner, Mark Hominick.

Winner: Mark Hominick by Unanimous Decision

I am not sure what to say here. I wish I could describe some offense for Stephan, but I really can't. Wait...there was that reverse side kick in the second round that rocked Rashad who was ducking his head. That's pretty much it, unless you count Stephan's submission attempts. Unfortunately, they don't count in MMA because an almost submission is like a wide looping punch that doesn't land. It looks pretty, but that's about it. Rashad picked Bonnar up a number of times and slammed him Hughes-style hard to the ground.
Rashad dominated this fight and stayed in top position for the entire fight.
The decision was yet another example of Cecil Peoples's inefficiency an MMA judge. He actually scored the fight 29-29, a tie. Unbelievable, that's all I can say.
Winner: Rashad Evans by majority decision and because of the tie, only two judges could give the fight to Rashad for the decision.

This one was all Macdonald. Kristian had some good attempts at sweeps and submissions, but Rob was just too strong. Just as Joe Rogan was saying that Macdonald had no submission skills, Macdonald secured a nice arm bar for the win. Rob's corner said, "There's your oneYou're back in it". I agree, welcome back Rob and we are all glad to see that your injury is completely healed.

Winner: Rob MacDonald by submission

This was a 50 second fight......50 seconds. I knew as soon as I saw the first jab land that Leben was done for. It was a blur and Leben didn't even have time to blink. Chris landed two solid punches and then got rocked and I thought for sure knocked out because it really looked that way to me. He managed to stagger up, but Silva was there and rocked him again. He knocked him out on his feet, but didn't know it because he secured a clinch and threw a knee for good measure. Leben was out and the fight was stopped. This had Franklin vs. Quarry all over it. I feel sorry for Chris because casual MMA fans don't know who Anderson Silva is and probably think Leben just lost to a nobody. They will know for sure who he is when he tears through the middleweight division towards a showdown with current UFC middleweight champion, Rich Franklin.

Winner: Anderson Silva by knockout

This was easily the fight of the night. Goulet came out and took Luke down and held him there with good ground and pound tactics. The second round is where it got really good as Luke rocked Goulet early and almost put him away.

Goulet took him down after gritting it out and took the last two minutes firmly into his favor. The third round saw Jonathan take Luke down again and after some good reversal attempts by Luke it appeared that the third round was in the books for Goulet. Cummo takes Goulet's back and locks in a rear naked choke that I thought would finish the Canadian for sure. Goulet survives and gains the top position after nearly going out. The judges scored the fight a majority decision for Goulet who seemed surprised that he got the victory.
Winner: Goulet by majority decision after another 29-29 tie was awarded from one of the judges.
