Leonard Garcia, George Roop, Anthony Pettis and Joseph Benavidez each earned "Fight Night" bonuses for their performances at Saturday's World Extreme Cagefighting 47: Bowles vs Cruz event.
Garcia and Roop each cashed in as the evening's "Fight of the Night" for their preliminary-card brawl, Pettis was awarded the "Knockout of the Night" award, and Benavidez earned the "Submission of the Night" bonus for his second-round chokeout of Miguel Torres.
Each bonus was worth $10,000.
MMA Junkie learned of the winners and award amounts in the post-fight press conference for World Extreme Cagefighting 47: Bowles vs Cruz, which took place at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, and aired on Versus.
Garcia and Roop met in the evening's third preliminary card matchup, and the 15-minute affair was action-packed throughout. Both fighters landed powerful strikes in the primarily stand-up affair, though late replacement Roop appeared on his way to victory. However, a third-round point deduction issued to Roop for a low blow left the fight a split draw with wild scores of 29-27, 27-29 and 28-28.
Despite the disappointing draw result, both fighters earned an extra $10,000 for their efforts.
While Ricardo Lomas made an early play for "Knockout of the Night" in the evening's very first contest with an expertly timed knee, Pettis left little doubt that he would be cashing an extra check with his stunning finish.
After fighting from his back early in the contest and fighting through an illegal blow seconds later, Pettis unleashed a left high kick that appeared to leave opponent Daniel Castillo out before he hit the ground. Pettis followed up with lightning quick punches, but the damage had been done.
The "Submission of the Night" award was also a hotly contested award, as Scott Jorgensen's stunning submission of Chad George was one of the most brutal chokes in recent memory. But the award went to Benavidez, whose guillotine choke finish was as impressive as it was shocking.
Considered an underdog, Benavidez dominated the entirety of the matchup with former champion Miguel Torres before slicing him open with an elbow and then sinking in the finishing maneuver. The impressive win likely earned Benavidez a title shot along with the $10,000 World Extreme Cagefighting 47: Bowles vs Cruz bonus.
