Injury Forces Lightweight Ian Butlin into Retirement
Date submitted: 27 July 2009
Author: M-1 Global

Despite having competed just two times in the M-1 Challenge, it didn't take Team England's Ian Butlin long to become one of the most popular competitors involved with this year's competition.

Butlin, who served as Team England's lightweight representative during an April show in Japan and an June date in Kansas City, quickly became known for his charismatic personality on-camera and his affable nature once the lenses were closed and the microphones were turned off.

Unfortunately, Butlin's run in the M-1 Challenge will not continue when Team England returns to competition on Aug. 15-16 during the fight series seventh edition in Holland, billed as a "weekend of fighting."

Ian Dean, the manager of Team England and a representative of Warrior Promotions Fighter Management, informed M-1 Global earlier this week that Butlin has been forced into early retirement.

According to Dean, Butlin's aggressive fighting style has led to multiple facial fractures. Butlin was first diagnosed with the injury following his June 6 first round KO loss to Makhtar Gueye, and it was doctors also determined that it was likely Butlin had entered the fight with some existing damage. Medical officials have recommended that he retire from combat sports competition and while Butlin wanted to defy doctors orders, Dean stated that Butlin's twin brother and coach, Andy, convinced Butlin to re-think his decision.

M-1 Global would like to thank Ian Butlin for his contributions to the M-1 Challenge and wish him the best in his future endeavors.

Butlin was most recently featured on Bravo TV in the U.K. as the main subject of film star Danny Dyer's documentary series Danny Dyer's Deadliest Men 2: Living Dangerously. The documentary chronicles Butlin's up-and-down journey during this year's M-1 Challenge.
