Low Blow Halts Cro Cop vs Overeem Clash

The bout between Alistair "Demolition Man" Overeem and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic at Dream 6: Middle Weight Grand Prix 2008 Final was declared a no contest after a low blow from the Dutchman.
For long periods of the first round, the fight was on the canvas, with Overeem landing punches and hammers fists from inside the Croatian’s guard. When they got back to their feet - Overeem landed a series of hard knees to the body. A final knee struck Cro-Cop in the groin - and the referee halted the contest for a couple of minutes to give him time to recover.
On the restart - Overeem immediately fired of more knees in the clinch and, once again, caused Filipovic to buckle from another low blow.
Cro-Cop received medical attention and was clearly in extreme discomfort. Cro-Cop’s corner said the impact had caused his right testicle to ascend into his body and stayed there.
Cro-Cop was unable to continue and the fight was declared a no contest.
Special guest Fedor Emelianenko presented flowers to both men before the fight. It was strongly rumoured that the winner would fight Fedor on New Year’s Eve. The inconclusive ending means it is now unclear who the opponent for Fedor will be. Overeem took the microphone after the fight and declared he was the number one in DREAM and was ready to fight anyone. |
