Three More Fights Added to UFC 90 Card

A trio of lightweight bouts have been added to the rumored UFC 90: Silva vs Cote fight card, according to MMA Weekly. Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk will take on Tyson Griffin, former title challenger Hermes Franca will meet Gleison Tibau, and Spencer Fisher will fight Melvin Guillard at the fall pay-per-view event.

UFC 90: Silva vs Cote takes place on October 25th at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois and features a main event middleweight championship clash between current title-holder Anderson Silva and challenger Patrick Cote. Welterweight contenders Diego Sanchez and Thiago Alves are slated to meet in the UFC 90 co-main event.

Sean Sherk successfully defended the 155-pound championship last July with a win over Hermes Franca but was stripped of the title after testing positive for steroids. After serving a suspension, Sherk returned to the octagon in May and immediately challenged lightweight champion BJ Penn but lost the bout via third-round TKO. Tyson Griffin has won five of his six bouts inside the octagon and is currently riding a four-fight win streak with victories over Clay Guida, Thiago Tavares, Gleison Tibau, and Marcus Aurelio.

Following his loss to Sherk, Hermes Franca also tested positive for steroids and served a year-long suspension. He returned in July, losing to Frank Edgar via unanimous decision in the “Fight of the Night” at UFC: Ultimate Fight Night 14. Prior to the back-to-back losses, Franca had won eight-straight contests. After winning three-straight UFC fights over Jason Dent, Jeff Cox, and Terry Etim, Gleison Tibau dropped back-to-back fights to Tyson Griffin and Joe Stevenson.

Spencer Fisher bounced back from a late-2007 loss to Frank Edgar with a unanimous decision victory over Jeremy Stephens in his latest bout at The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale in June. Fisher has won six of his nine bouts in the octagon. Melvin Guillard opened his UFC career with wins in three of his first four bouts but next suffered a first-round submission loss to Joe Stevenson in the main event of UFC: Ultimate Fight Night 9 and was subsequently suspended 8 months after testing positive for cocaine following the bout. He returned in December to take on rival Rich Clementi, but lost the bout via first-round submission. After winning a single bout outside of the promotion Guillard knocked out Dennis Siver in 36-seconds at UFC 86: Jackson vs Griffin in July.
