Jake Shields Claims EliteXC Title

Jake Shields comprehensively defeated Nick Thompson to claim the vacant Elite Xtreme Combat welterweight title in the main event of Elite Xtreme Combat: Unfinished Business at Stockton Arena on Saturday night. Shields took Thompson down at the beginning of the fight and then mounted and submitted him with a guillotine in just over a minute.
Shields told reporters he had been confident of victory:
"Lately all my fights have been ending fast, so I've been getting used to it. I was in great shape and ready to fight 25 minutes, but it ended fast and I can't complain."
"It meant a lot to me. I felt like the uncrowned champion, and I would have been embarrassed if I had lost."
"I feel like I'm on top of my game right now. I'm willing to fight anyone”.
Thompson paid tribute to the new champion after the fight:
"There's no shame in losing to someone like Jake. But I am embarrassed by the way I lost. I made a mistake and he caught me early. Jake made me look like a kid out there." |
