Gabriel Gonzaga Back to Winning Ways

One man went into UFC 86: Jackson vs Griffin feeling he had more to prove than most. Heavyweight contender Gabriel Gonzaga impressively broke a two fight losing streak against Justin McCully, submitting his foe less than two minutes into their preliminary bout at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
“I worked hard for this fight,” said Gonzaga “Thank God I got the submission.”
Gonzaga was sharp from the opening bell, sending McCully to the canvas with a kick to his back leg. Once on the mat, ‘Napao’ was not to be denied. He quickly transitioned into the mount position, and though McCully gamely fought out of it, Gonzaga got right back to business, ending matters at 1:57 of the first with a kimura.
Gonzaga’s two defeats had come at the hands of top class opponents. At UFC 80: Rapid Fire he was stopped in the second round by leading contender Fabricio Werdum. Before that, at UFC 74: Respect, Gonzaga was defeated by the legendary Randy Couture in “The Natural's” last UFC fight. |
