"Mr. International" Shonie Carter, one of MMA’s most active and outspoken fighters, recently signed a deal with Strikeforce.
While the terms of his contract have not been released, Carter’s first fight under the San Jose based organization has been announced. He will take on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu artist, Luke Stewart, at StrikeForce: Melendez vs Thomson on June 27 in a welterweight bout.
Shonie’s Strikeforce debut will most likely be overshadowed by the long awaited and much anticipated main event between Strikeforce lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez, and Josh Thompson. The event will take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA.
Carter, who made his pro debut over a decade ago, has put together an impressive record of 39-17-7 and has fought some of the toughest fighters in the game. Best known for his spinning back fist KO over Matt Serra, Shonie was one of the most popular cast members on season 4 of "The Ultimate Fighter". He is currently featured as a coach on BET’s Mixed Martial Arts reality series, "Iron Ring".
Carter was recently in the news after witnessing one of the most incredible fight endings in the history of the sport. As a guest referee at Legends of Fighting 25 on May 16th, Shonie witnessed an 8 second double knockout between two rookie fighters who were making their LFC debut. The event ironically took place at the 8 Seconds Saloon in Indianapolis.
Shonie’s opponent, Luke Stewart, has fought all six of his pro fights under the Strikeforce banner. He was on an impressive 5 fight win streak leading up to his fight against Muay Thai specialist, Tiki Ghosn, at the Shamrock vs Le event in March. Ghosn upset Stewart, out striking him to take home the unanimous decision.
