Organisers of last weekends Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Event the Combat Sports Open Trials 2008: 2nd Leg have received an official complaint against one of the fighters who took part in the event, which has meant that the results from both fights have been overruled as No Contests.
Heavyweight fighter Ronny Gill fought twice on Sunday's event (as is usual for all competitors in the Open Trials events), winning both of his fights. The first win was an impressive armlock in 29 seconds against Ross Davies. He then when on to fight Robert Penhale and the fight was stopped by the referee when Ronny performed the same armlock, and although Robert did not tap out his elbow was fully locked and actually made a distinct 'popping' noise - forcing the referee to stop the contest on the grounds of fighter safety, despite complaints from Penhale that although his elbow popped he never tapped out.
Despite Ronny Gill's impressive performance, it seems that he had (presumably inadvertently) broken the rules of the event before he even arrived to fight.
Combat Sports Promotions have received an official complaint, claiming that Ronny has taken part in two Professional rules MMA bouts within the last twelve months, and it specifically states within the rules of the amateur event that:
"In the interest of maintaining safety and fairness within amateur competition, competitors who have engaged in two or more 'Professional Bouts' will not be permitted to compete in the Combat Sports Open Trials."
So, the results of both fights have been overturned and officially classified as 'No Contests', meaning that the losses will not count against the official amateur fight records of either Ross Davies or Robert Penhale, whilst also not counting either for or against the fight record of Ronny Gill, as it is believed that he did not breach the rule either purposefully nor intentionally, and so this action is the fairest solution for all three fighters involved.
