Matt Serra Fights For Law Change in New York

Matt Serra is at the forefront of the campaign to get Mixed Martial Arts legalised in his home state of New York.
The sport has been banned in the state for eleven years. Serra, acting with a team representing the Ultimate Fighting Championship, has been in Albany trying to get the ban overturned.
The UFC team which is lobbying the state legislature includes lawyer Lawrence Epstein. He gave his assessment of the situation to the New York Times:
“Our position is that they banned a sport that really doesn’t exist anymore. It’s tough to sort of prognosticate when it comes to whether something is going to pass, but I can tell you we have not received any negative feedback from any of the meetings that we’ve had. And I can tell you that part of it is the education process — we need to educate people about the sport. I think when people have certain perceptions and they are confronted with evidence all of a sudden, those perceptions change. In large part that’s what we are here trying to do — change those perceptions.”
