BJ Penn Sentenced to Probation

BJ Penn has been sentenced to one years probation and ordered to pay $2000 in restitution for hitting a cop in brawl outside a Waikiki bar two years ago.

The Honolulu Advertiser reports that, as part of a no-contest plea agreement with prosecutors, Penn must also abstain from alcohol, submit to substance abuse treatment, perform 50 hours of community service and submit to random drug and alcohol tests.

Speaking outside the court, Penn said:

"I want to thank the fans for the support and for sticking by me through thick and thin. It's time to move on with my life and focus on my career. I'm glad it's done."

BJ Penn will face Joe Stevenson for the UFC Lightweight title on January 19th at UFC 80: Rapid Fire in Newcastle, UK. The title is vacant as a result of Sean Sherk being stripped of the title after his testing positive after his fight with Hermes Franca at UFC 73: Stacked. Sherk’s ban was reduced from one year to six months on appeal.
