Mac Danzig added another feather to his cap when he finished Tommy Speer at the Ultimate Finale in the finale of the welterweight tournament and then went on to say he is adding himself to the mix within the deep lightweight division and could collide with the previous season’s winner Nathan Diaz. Danzig admits he would find it difficult in the welterweight divisions as he would give away a rather big weight advantage if he carried on and walks around at the 172lbs mark, so he feels more comfortable as a lightweight.
The determined Danzig was very confident in the series of his ability and stated on numerous occasions that his fellow competitors weren’t to the same standard as the experienced Legends Gym fighter out of California. With Danzig being so reserved & vocal in the reality series he was short of friends and was labeled the grump for his moods and rants on the other fighters especially Blake Bowman & Richie Hightower who he believed to be frauds of the industry and questioned their reasons for entering the competition, though was full of enemies Danzig did form a friendship with Paul Georgioff who was defeated by the UFC veteran and French Canadian Jonathan Goulet on the Ultimate Finale card.
Danzig has always been successful even at amateur level becoming the MMA national champion of the Extreme Challenge trials in 2001 and then stepping into the noticeable smaller organizations of Gladiator Challenge, King of the Cage and now the ever popular IFL where he became a champion in the lightweight division.
In the past, Danzig was known for his association with R1 fight team (formerly RAW) and had been a student of Iowa wrestling standout Rico Chiapparelli and MMA fighter Frank Trigg. Since then he has trained boxing extensively at Wild Card gym in Hollywood, California under Freddie Roach assistant Justin Fortune.
While Danzig is known as an impressive grappler, having scored 12 of his victories by submission, he has proven himself to be an adept striker, most notably with his TKO victory over former lightweight champion Takumi Nakayama.
After defeating Royce Gracie black belt Buddy Clinton on August 4, 2006, Danzig increased his winning streak to 12 in a row with a unanimous decision victory over Miletich fighter John Mahlow on September 29th in Calgary, Alberta Canada.
Danzig then lost his KOTC title to Clay French on January 19, 2007 by split decision.
In his first major fight, facing Hayato Sakurai at PRIDE 33 on February 24, Danzig lost the fight by TKO at the 4:09 mark of round two.
While on The Ultimate Fighter, Danzig defeated Joe Scarola in a preliminary fight and later defeated John Kolosci to make it to the semifinals of TUF 6. He then defeated John Kolosci (who replaced an injured Matt Arroyo) again in the semifinals.
