With only 30 days to go the first batch of fights for FEG's K-1: Premium Dynamite 2007 event have been posted both on the official HERO'S & K-1 websites.
Heading up the card we have MMA superstar Kazushi Sakuraba, taking on the fresh out of retirement Masakatsu Funaki. Whilst Sakuraba needs no introduction at all, the name Funaki may not be known to a few fans out in the MMA world. Funaki, who has fought for Pancrase throughout his entire career is currently 38-11-1 and has taken on (and beaten) the likes of Semmy Schilt, Yuki Kondo, Guy Mezger, Ken Shamrock and Bas Rutten. For me this is a tough one to call - Sakuaraba has fought the biggest names in the sport and beaten most of them, yet Funaki's experiance cannot be denied either. If you asked me to make a choice right now I'd tell you not to be such an idiot and be happy for whoever wins, but if pressured me for an answer I would probably say Sakuraba... By Armbar... In the second round...
Also announced for the December 31st event, is Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto vs Rani Yahira. Kid has recently made a return out of retirement; he had planned to represent Japan in the Olympic Games however due to an injury which made this impossible, he returned to face Bibiano Fernandes at HERO'S on September 17th 2007 at the Yokohama Arena. Rani Yahira, is well known for fighting at HERO'S during 2006 and more recently for World Extreme Cagefighting. In my honest opinion this seems like a bit of a mis-match as Kid has fought much tougher (Read: Royler Gracie & Genki Sudo) opponents in the past compared to Yahira's past opponents. Don't get me wrong, I don't doubt either fighter's ability at all but I have to give this one to Kid, based purely on his experiance.
A K-1 bout also announced is Masato TBC vs Choi Yong Soo. Masato has beaten pretty much every K-1 fighter he has come up against, with the exception of Andy Souwer. He has beaten Buakaw Por Pramuk, Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto and Lithuanian powerhouse Remigijus Morkevicius. Choi however, whilst maintains a perfect 3-0-0 record, is vastly less experianced than Masato, but hey - everyone has a chance, right? In fairness I don't see this one going past the first round with a knockout from Masato almost guaranteed.
Also announced is a 4 man (or should I say 4 teenager) K-1 Rules Under 18 Tournament. Schedualed to fight are Hiroya TBC vs Tsukasa Fuji and Kenji Kubo vs Yudai TBC. I have not seen any of these fighters compete before so it would be impossible to predict a winner, but all the same its good to see FEG giving the (potential) K-1 stars of tomorrow a chance at arguably the World's largest combat sports event.
Its worth noting too that there are loads of rumoured fights flying round the net right now - the most notable are Sergei Kharitonov vs Siala "Mighty Mo" Siliga, and Fedor Emelianenko vs Choi Hong Man, although the latter rumour does appear to have been shot down in flames, but, we shall see...
Roll on new years eve!!
