Gilbert Melendez vs Josh Thomson for Strikeforce Title

Gilbert Melendez will defend his Strikeforce Lightweight title against Josh Thomson on March 8th, 2008. The announcement was made when both fighters entered the cage at the Strikeforce: Four Men Enter One Man Survives in San Jose, California.

Gilbert Melendez has held the belt since he defeated Clay Guida in June 2006. His last fight for Strikeforce, a unanimous decision win against Tetsuji Kato at StrikeForce: Playboy Mansion, was a non title fight. He trains with Jake Shields at Jake’s Cesar Gracie affiliate at the Fairtex gym in San Francisco.

Josh Thomson lost to Clay Guida at StrikeForce: Shamrock vs Gracie. Since then, Thomson has put himself in title contention with five straight wins on Strikeforce promotions. His most recent contest was, like Gilbert Melendez, on the StrikeForce: Playboy Mansion card. Thomson beat Adam Lynn by Technical Knockout in the first round.
