World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) have announced details of the card for World Extreme Cagefighting 31: Faber vs Curran. With three world titles on the line as well as the return of a true mixed martial arts legend, the event on Wednesday, December 12th is not only the biggest and best WEC show of the year, it may be the greatest card in the six year history of the organization.
Featuring WEC Featherweight Champion “The California Kid” Urijah Faber against Jeff "Big Frog" Curran, “The Rhino” Doug Marshall defending his Light Heavyweight title against Cuba’s own Ariel Gandolla, Paulo Filho returning to the Cage to defend his WEC Middleweight crown, and former UFC Lightweight Champion Jens "Little Evil" Pulver making his WEC debut at 145 lbs. against rising star Cub Swanson, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas will be rocked off its foundations by the most explosive MMA action of 2007.
In the main event, one of the MMA’s best pound-for-pound, Urijah Faber, defends his WEC Featherweight title against UFC and PRIDE veteran Jeff "Big Frog" Curran.
With technique, tenacity, and charisma, Sacramento’s Urijah Faber, has proven time and time again why he is considered one of the brightest young stars in MMA today. Faber captured the WEC title in March of 2006 with a decisive second round stoppage of Cole Escovedo. Since then, he has continued to dominate the division, defending his crown with first round wins over Joe Pearson, Dominic Cruz, and Chance Farrar. But on December 12, he will take on his toughest opponent yet in Jeff Curran.
Jeff "Big Frog" Curran, fighting out of Crystal Lake, Ill., is a battle-tested veteran of MMA competition, having fought all over the world while compiling an impressive record. On August 5, WEC fans witnessed the return of one of the featherweight division’s best when Curran dominated Stephen Ledbetter, defeating him by unanimous decision. Curran knows that he has to be on top of his game when he squares off against Faber, in what is expected to be the most exciting featherweight battle in MMA history.
Hard punching Light Heavyweight Champion “The Rhino” Doug Marshall is eager to defend his crown on December 12th and show why he is the legitimate champion in the WEC’s 205-pound division. In order to do that, he must first get past Cuba’s Ariel Gandolla.
Marshall’s last two fights have ended in brutal fashion, as he knocked both of his opponents out with vicious strikes. He is looking to add another KO to his record against Gandolla, a hard-nosed competitor who will bring his ‘A’ game in order to make the best of his long-awaited title shot.
The king of the middleweight division, undefeated sensation Paulo Filho is back in the Cage looking to continue his reign as middleweight champion. His opponent will be named in the near future.
Also on the card, Jens "Little Evil" Pulver will be making his long awaited WEC debut at 145 lbs. against Cub Swanson. Pulver, after a storied career at lightweight in the UFC, is looking forward to fighting at his natural weight. Pulver is undoubtedly eyeing a title shot in the future, but knows he must first get past rising star Cub Swanson to obtain his shot at the belt. Swanson is happy to play the spoiler, and he has proven why he should never be taken lightly, as his last two fights in the WEC have ended with his hand being raised. He has impressed many with his well rounded style, and he knows that if he beats Pulver, a title shot is not far away.
