Carano Scores First Submission Win

Gina Carano, fighting on the undercard of Elite Xtreme Combat: Uprising, scored her first submission win over Tonya Evinger in the first round of their bout on Saturday.
Carano, who is quickly becoming the face of womens MMA, is best known for both her looks and for fighting with a Muay Thai style, was taken down by Evinger early in the bout and found herself under pressure on the fence as Evinger tried to take full mount. Showing some surprising power Carano reversed the positions and began to rain shots down which Evinger defended by fatally turning onto her stomach. From there Carano sunk in the rear choke that would end the contest. In a somewhat grim statement made after the contest Carano said “I don’t even know what was going through my head. I was like ‘I just want to choke her, I just want to choke her till she doesn’t breathe anymore. Why won’t she just die?’”
Earlier speculation had been made as to how Carano would cope during the match as she had looked dehydrated and drained when trying to make her weight for the bout.(set at a 140 pound limit). Carano had ultimately failed the weight, weighing 141.1 pounds, but Tonya Evinger decided to go ahead with the fight instead of having the fight cancelled. |
