James Mair Defends Upcoming Cage Wars in Glasgow

A cage fighting event that has attracted widespread criticism has been defended by a prominent Edinburgh fighter.
James Mair, from Dalkeith, acknowledged the sport of Mixed Martial Arts did have its dangers, but said campaigners against it were notorious for blowing the risks out of proportion.
Speaking ahead of Scotland's first major cage-fighting event in Glasgow next month, which has been slammed by politicians, religious leaders and police, Mr Mair, 27, backed the event.
The civil servant said: "It is a full contact sport. This means there is always a danger of injury in fights but no more than you might see in a professional boxing match.
"These are recognised full contact sports but they are reviled by the media and politicians. It is the lack of understanding and unwillingness to learn about the sport that clouds their minds.
"Every bout is carefully watched by a referee and there are rules that protect fighters. There are also paramedics and medical staff at every event by cageside."
