Guillen replaces Sims in Global FC Heavyweight Championship Bout

As announced two weeks ago, the first ever Global Fighting Championships 1 Heavyweight Champion will be crowned on August 17 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Although that is still the case, one piece of the Global FC Heavyweight Championship puzzle has been changed. Wes Sims, originally slated to battle Jeff "The Snowman" Monson for the gold at Global FC’s debut event, cost himself his opportunity to become the inaugural Global FC Heavyweight Ace when he was defeated by Chris Guillen on July 7. Guillen scored the victory by TKO (corner stoppage) after round 2. Sims not only suffered defeat that night, but was injured in the process. As a result, Global FC announces a new pairing to determine the new Global FC Heavyweight Champion.

Jeff "The Snowman" Monson vs. Chris Guillen

After his impressive victory over Sims, Chris Guillen finds himself with a golden opportunity to make history on August 17. Faced with the challenge of naming a replacement for Sims, Global FC decided to reward Guillen with the title shot. “Guillen has proven that he is the better man; he deserves this opportunity” said promoter Wayne Demilia. In fact, the July 7 bout marked Guillen’s second win over Sims; Chris holds a previous unanimous decision victory over “The Project”. Guillen enters the biggest fight in his career with a winning professional MMA record of 7-5-0. He has fought tough competition including the likes of Sims and current UFC standout “Texas Crazy Horse” Heath Herring. Will he be able to score the upset?

It won’t be easy, as his opponent is a master of the mat, Jeff "The Snowman" Monson.

Monson was given the nickname “The Snowman” due to his impressive performance at the 1999 Abu Dhabi Combat Club tournament, defeating four Brazilian competitors in a row as a relative unknown. It was said that like a snowball, Monson was “white, compact, rolling, and kept getting bigger and stronger as the tournament went on”. Monson ended up winning the ADCC Championship. Jeff has a Masters Degree in Psychology but now uses his “Masters Degree” in submission grappling instead. Monson has fought in Pride FC and has competed for the UFC Heavyweight Championship in the past. Will the sudden change of opponent have an effect on Monson? Also, how much did the fight with Sims take out of Guillen? If Guillen is fresh, does the fact that he is warm, and coming off of a big win give him an advantage since Monson has not fought since Pride 34 on April 8? All of these questions will be answered on August 17 when Monson and Guillen lock horns with the Global FC Heavyweight Championship hanging in the balance.
