WBO world heavyweight champion "Merciless" Ray Mercer and street-fighting legend Kevin Ferguson come from very different backgrounds.
Mercer is an Olympic gold medalist. Over the course of his boxing career, he has beaten Francesco Damiani and Tommy Morrison and compiled a record of 34-6-1 with 25 wins by knockout.
Kimbo has never had a professional, sanctioned fight. Instead, he is infamous for beating opponents senseless in backyards and parking lots in videos available in online video-sharing sites like youtube.com. He boasts a record of 7-1 in bare-knuckle street fights.
June 23, both fighters will make their mixed martial arts debuts when they face each other in the main event of Cage Fury Fighting Championships 5: Two Worlds, One Cage.
During a recent press conference, Kimbo shared his thoughts on facing a former world champion boxer.
"In a street fight I just pull up in the hummer and whoop ass," he said. "Since I signed for this fight I have cut out a lot of things in my life.
I have been training my ass off. I haven't even had sex in three months so I am all backed up, but my life is in a complete change but for the better. I am ready for whatever. I am ready for anything coming."
Mercer said he's been working hard to round out his game, and plans to come into the cage ready for a street fight.
"I've been doing Jiu-Jitsu and training," he said. "I've been doing both. I am prepared to fight for anything. Kimbo says this is a street fight, anything goes. It's not like I havent fought a street fight. I've fought in the streets before. I have fought in the ring professional so I am ready for this fight. We worked with a lot of people to get prepared for this fight. Boxing is my thing and I will use that in this street fight."
