The February 2006 issue of Front Magazine features a four-page article on training at Elite Fighting Systems.
In the “Back in Black (and Blue)” article, Front reporter Dave Spence, undergoes an intensive four week training course under an uncompromising Dave O’Donnell.
Dave Spence arrives at the gym as a nine and a half stone weakling with all the usual pre-conceptions and nerves of any newbe but it isn’t long before he is mixing it up with the best of them and sparring with the likes of Brad Pickett.
Under the dietary guidance of Fight Mentor, Spence is even able to put on a stone of muscle in the short time he is there at the gym.
After the four weeks are up, the reporter has gained skills and really enjoyed the experience but when Cage Rage co-promoter offers him a fight at Cage Rage Spence politely declines.
It is great seeing more and more Mixed Martial Arts related content proliferating into the mainstream media and the most pleasing thing is that over time these pieces are loosing the traditional “Barbaric Human Cockfighting” theme and actually beginning to accept MMA as a sport rather than a spectacle.
The full acceptance that will make the sport reach it’s full potential in this country is still a way off but positive media like this will pave the way.
