Assuerio Silva Will Fight in Pancrase

Mixed martial arts fighter Assuerio Silva (12-6-0) has a chance to become the king.
King of Pancrase, that is.
May 30, the heavyweight from Brazil will fight in one of the longest running shows in Japan when he faces Tatsuya Mizuno (2-1-0) in the Pancrase 2007: Rising Tour.
Founded in 1993 by Japanese pro-wrestlers Masakatsu Funaki (38-11-1) and Minoru Suzuki (27-19-0) Pancrase began as a hybrid form of wrestling and kickboxing. Punching to the face was illegal and fighters were able to escape from submissions by grabbing into the ropes, but would lose a point for doing so.
In ’98 Pancrase began adopting rules like those of other mixed martial arts organizations, switching over completely in 2000, to allow closed fist punching to the face, with an 8-ounce open-finger glove.
The name “pancrase” is adopted from the ancient Olympic fighting sport of Pankration, which was a mixture of boxing and wrestling, not unlike modern MMA competition.
Former “King of Pancrase” title holders have included Ken Shamrock (26-12-2), Bas Rutten (28-4-1). Yuki Kondo (46-19-6) and Nate Marquardt (25-6-2).
