Cage Fighting Championships promoter, Paul Cahoon, has been vaguely mentioning putting on a REALLY big show for a while now.
The first time was after his first event in 2004, when Cahoon hinted that he had secured the princely sum of £200,000 with which he would stage a massive Super-Event.
Not much more was said after that and Cahoon continued to build his successful Liverpool based promotion, Cage Fighting Championship.
In December 2005, Cahoon announced that his Golden Glory team-mate Alistair Overeem would fight Brazilian Alexandre Ferreira in a special super-fight at his next show.
Today news broke that the team behind Cage Fighting Championships are going to be taking a massive step up and will present World Cage Fighting Championships at the colossal Manchester Evening News Arena.
The night will see an ‘Old Skool UFC’ style eight-man eliminator tournament, which will pit world class representatives of different modalities against one another. The grapevine suggests that UK MMA Champion Matt Ewin and UFC veteran Phil Baroni will be a part of this Grand Prix. We wouldn’t be surprised if Paul Cahoon himself entered the tournament.
The night will be topped off with two Super-Fights. As we have already mentioned, the main event is confirmed as being Alistair Overeeem vs Alexandre Ferreria the other we are speculating could be Stefan Leko vs Rodney Faverous.
Perhaps the most unbelievable news is that Iron Mike Tyson and Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton will be special guest referees.
And if that is not enough, former Pride FC commentator Bas Rutten will be in the commentary box for the first WCFC event.
Much of this information is speculation, as no official announcement has been made, but we will keep you posted.
