K-1’s Akiyama vs Sakuraba fight has been declared a no contest after it was revealed that Yoshihiro Akiyama was found to have broken the rules.
Following Sakuraba’s insistence that Akiyama was “greased up” FEG analysed pre fight footage and noticed Akiyama applying a skin cream to his legs.
FEG accepted Akiyama’s claims that the cream was to treat a dry skin complaint and was not intended to break the rules. However upon inspection by FEG, the skin cream Akiyama used was found to be oil based, therefore an infraction of the rules.
When asked for comment Akiyama said (Translated): “I’m sorry, I have no excuse for this. I fully apologise to Mr Sakuraba. I am prepared for any punishment from K-1 and would be happy to rematch.”
The win has been taken away from the Heros Light-Heavyweight Tournament champion and his entire fight purse has been revoked.
As for the issue of Akiyama’s strange distended right glove that bore no sponsor’s logo. K-1 said they are happy to accept that the logo can get easily rubbed off during a brisk training session.
