Pride 2007

PRIDE’s President Nobuyuki Sakakibara has shown his hand for 2007. Confirming rumours, Sakakibara made it official that he will amalgamate the Pride FC and Bushido events to become a single entity featuring stars from across the weight classes. In Sakakibara’s own words: “The regular PRIDE shows will now include Heavyweight fighters like Fujita, and lightweight fighters such as Takanori Gomi.” Pride’s President let it be known that as of 2007 “Pride Bushido” will exist solely as a brand name for the international shows that they have planned for among others, China, Thailand, Brazil, Croatia and of course the USA. “If we do a PRIDE Bushido in China, then you may see Sanda fighters participate. If we do a PRIDE Bushido in Thailand, you may see Muay Thai fighters participate. And in our World Tour, we hope to have Mike Tyson participate.” That is not all. From now on only one PRIDE Grand Prix will be staged per year. This means that a Grand Prix for a particular weight class will come up every four years, but there will be a title defence at every regular PRIDE show. And as for this New Year’s Eve’s Shockwave event, Sakakibara hinted at the participation of a major household name, who they are in the final stages of contracting to face Openweight Grand Prix Champion Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. |
