I caught up with Kelly Kobald, who went 4 rounds with Tara La Rosa before getting arm barred at the last Bodog Fight event in New Jersey. She has the best smile I have ever seen and looks like a model. I could not believe that this girl could rip my limbs off at a moments notice. The way she looks, I just might let her.
Hey Kelly how’s it going today?
Great, I love coming to Bodog Fight events.
Well I took that fight on a 2 weeks short notice. I wish I had a longer time to train. I think I would have given her a better run. Though my fight with her was very entertaining I know I can do way more now.
Two weeks notice, you still put up a hell of a fight.
Yeah I know but I do want a rematch and I think I can beat her, but I’m not making excuses. We fought. She won.
So how did you get started in MMA?
Well I always competed in cross country and swimming but about 5 years ago I went to an underground fight and for some reason they needed two girls to fight. I said why not and they pulled me from the crowd. I ended up knocking the girl out. I caught the fight bug after that and have been training ever since.
You have only been training 5 years and you went toe to toe with probably the pound for pound best women’s fighter in the world, I’m so impressed.
Smiles, I just love the adrenaline rush, I’m addicted to the rush of fighting.
Again I can not believe you’ve been training for only 5 years and your record is 16-2-1, you are my hero.
Thanks but I do have holes in my game that I’m starting to eliminate.
So where are you training now to fine tune your game?
I have been training with UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk at the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy along with Greg Nelson, Nat McIntyre, Andy Grahn, Ryan Murray, Ishmael Bentley, and Rick Noyes.
Wow tough group, any other girls at that club to roll with?
There is one other but I mostly fight with the guys.
YOU roll with the UFC lightweight Champion?
Everyday.
So what do you think about Sherk’s positive steroid test?
He is innocent. The moment he tested positive he demanded a second test. He would never use steroids and I’m 100% certain of that. I see him everyday and if you look at his body it hasn’t changed from the time he has started fighting. Absolutely no way he is on steroids. Just look at his body, it looks the same as it did 10 years ago.
So if you train with Sherk do you do the caveman training as well?
I just started.
No way that is the most intense training regiment I have ever seen.
Yes, it is so hard but I love it. Right now I do the 300 movie routine and I love the fact that the course changes everyday.
So you actually pick up and roll that huge ass tire?
No not yet, I do the little one but that’s still hard as hell.
Honestly I can’t believe you put your body through that hell; well you’ve got a killer body from it. Insane body folks, I mean this girl is She Ra: Hot and Deadly.
Thanks.
So tell me about your fight game.
I’m a ground and pound girl. I love to punish an opponent in the stand up and then take her to the ground and pound her out.
How do you want to improve your game?
I need to improve on my technique more and tie up loose habits that I use to make. The guys in Minnesota are pointing out my weaknesses and I’m working real hard to improve my base.
So how’s your BJJ and jujitsu going?
Smiles wait till next fight. You’ll see.
When is your next fight?
Hopefully on the November card.
Anyone you want to fight next?
Of course I want a rematch with Tara but I’d love to fight Tama Chan. That would be a great fight for the fans.
So how has Bodog Fight treated you?
My God I love them; they respect and treat the girls like everyone else. They are a first class organization and without a doubt a leader in women’s fighting.
Any last words?
I’d like to thank my sponsors American Fighter, Punishment, Gamma-O, Muscle Milk, Athletic Performance Institute, I fight, and seriouspimp.com. I hope I did not forget anyone.
Thanks for talking with me today.
You are very welcome.
