After the success of the first Ultimate Combat show, it was going to be a tall order to eclipse previous proceedings, but promoters Combat Sports Promotions and ML Sports managed not to disappoint!

The show attracted over 800 fight fans to the packed Olympiad Leisure Centre in Chippenham, all eager for action. The production quality of the show was, as ever, excellent, with a roaring sound system, spotlights, laser lights and smoke machines all helping to create the perfect atmosphere.

The lights dimmed out, the spotlights on the ring came up and then BANG. A huge explosion and flash saw copious amounts of streamers rain down over the crowd. This caused a huge cheer as MC, Phil Walker, entered the ring and the nights entertainment began.

Subtitled 'The World Warriors', the show featured thirteen thrilling fights with fighters from 8 different countries, and introduced the UK to some new European talent, in the shape of three Shoot Union fighters from Spain and the French King of the Cage veteran Patrick Lebreton. Sadly for the Spanish contingent, only one fighter stepped into the ring, as the opponent for the second Spaniard pulled out at the eleventh hour, but I am sure we'll be seeing these fighters in the UK again soon.

Sheffield teenage sensation Ross Pettiffer faced a pumped up Matt Sperring from Bristol, and both came out firing heavy artillery. On the way in Ross took one on the chin, but weathered the storm to take his opponent down to secure the mount and after one minute jockeying for position, Pettiffer dropped in for an arm bar to win again in calm and convincing style.

Mark Chen, who fought impressively in the San Gokui Invitational in the UK was up against UC1 veteran Alex Owen and it was clearly striker against grappler as Chen was content to stay standing and had his hands full defending Owen's shoots. In the end Owen's persistence paid off and was given the win by the Judges.

In another striker vs grappler match-up, BJJ blue belt Colin Burton (Gracie Barra) faced Rough House Gym fighter Mark Collett. Burton clearly wanted to fight on the ground and took Collett down a number of times, but Collett managed to defend well and get back to his feet. By the end of the fight, Burton was the first to run out of steam, but soldiered on, looking for a submission on the ground, but Collett's clever defending ensured he left the ring the winner.

BJJ purple belt Pedro Martins from Brazil gave Ross Mackenzie more than he could handle in their International bout. Martins combined crisp striking with trademark BJJ takedowns, and was rewarded with a 3:29 tap out via kimura from scarf hold.

In the most anticipated fights of the evening, seasoned fighter Kevin O'Hagan proved that age makes no difference in the ring as he dominated Scotsman Andy Proctor both standing and on the floor, with heavy duty kidney shots echoing around the arena. The combination of aggression and heavy hands made O'Hagan the winner by unanimous Judges decision.

Perhaps the most agonising fight of the evening was in the first match between Mark Spencer against Robbie Miller. Miller dropped Spenna with a heavy low kick and it looked like an early finish, but Miller had not counted on the excellent ground skills of his opponent. From the guard Spenna regained his composure and worked up Miller's body and attacked with arm bars, triangles and sweeps that had Miller on the back foot. Back on their feet Miller traded blows with Spenna and managed to take him down and worked the side position, whereby Spenna reversed and took the mount and rained down some serious leather, at least half a dozen shots connecting without any resistance. After a number of double leg attacks from Spenna the bell sounded and the match went to a decision in Spenna's favour, and in a cruel twist of fate and some mind-boggling logic from the judges, a mistake was made and the match was in fact a victory for Miller, much to the crowd and Spenna's disapproval. To his credit, Spenna took the decision like a true sportsman and vowed to be back again in the future, where you can be sure there'll be no cause for decisions.

UFC legend Remco Pardoel brought over one of his academies top students Gideon Ackermans, who faced the UK's Shaun Parkin. Gidion quickly got to work as he hammered his way to victory, finally taking the match with a kimura 1:15 into the first round. Remco is currently training hard for his up and coming US bouts in Rage in the Cage and King of the Cage in September where he will face Eric Pele. He is also in talks with the Ultimate Combat promoters making arrangements for a future UK appearance for the giant Dutchman.

Shain Tovell gave a blistering performance as he dispatched his opponent John Jones via a first round triangle choke in the British Title Semi-Final. John opened the match with some impressive striking, but seasoned Tovell showed his skill and neutralised the attack, and held out for the impressive submission. Shain now goes through to fight for the British Title at Ultimate Combat 3.

Peacocks Gym/London Shootfighters sensation Gaz Roriston shook off the shackles of a senseless stoppage in his last fight to take on KOTC veteran Patrick Lebreton. Roriston took command from the opening bell as Lebreton only had the chance to throw one kick, before being swiftly taken to the floor by Roriston and after two minutes of punishment Roriston dropped in for an arm bar to take the match in fine style.

The Superfight between Glen Brown and Spanish fighter Rafael Comes was an anti-climax after all the action packed fights that proceeded. Brown was content on clinching his opponent and made a few lacklustre attempts to take his man down and Comes was happy to hang in there and it wasn't until the second round that Comes woke up and started to land in some heavy bombs. This was a wake up call to Brown and he responded like wise and for the remainder of the second round they managed to light up an otherwise dull fight, and after overtime Comes was given the silverware.

However the main fight of the night was once again delivered by the UK's most active fighter to date, Welsh hard hitter Paul Jenkins. There isn't a UK MMA show that Paul hasn't fought in and it was clearly Jenkins night as he faced UC1 veteran and Wing Chun stylist Simon Bloom. Jenkins was coming off a mediocre performance in Cage Wars 2 and needed to liven up for this fight and in the opening seconds Bloom sliced in a number of low shots to Jenkins legs. However it wasn't long before Jenkins had Bloom on the ropes with a guillotine attempt, taking time to land a few knees to Bloom's head and shortly after Jenkins unleashed the hands of stone and sent Bloom to the canvas. Bloom, to his credit got back on his feet, but the fight had gone out of him and it was pure survival as Jenkins piled on the pressure with kicks and punches and at one point threw him across the ring like a rag doll. Jenkins took his time and picked his shots, all of which connected with full power and Bloom took a number of rest periods to clear up the blood before Jenkins moved in for the kill and hammered away at Bloom's kidneys from the ground. The referee has seen enough and stepped in to stop further punishment. A deserved victory for the hard hitting fighter who is going all the way. This win will see him face up against Shain Tovell at Ultimate Combat 3 for the British Middleweight Title - expect a war!

Event promoter, Dale Adams, with his excellent back stage crew, gave the UK MMA fans another night of quality entertainment and all eyes will be on Chippenham for the next event.

Ultimate Combat 3 will return to the Olympiad in Chippenham on the 8th of September, and there are big plans already afoot. Dale Adams, the events promoter, said "if you thought the first two shows are good then be prepared - we're only warming up!"

There will be a video available of this event for those who are interested. The video for the first show is also now available and tickets or information on future shows can be obtained by contacting: ML Sports (01225) 359666 - www.mlsports.co.uk

ULTIMATE COMBAT 3 will be held on Sunday September 8th at the Olympiad in Chippenham.
