Semmy Schilt of the Netherlands came out on top of all challengers to win the K-1 World Grand Prix 07 Final at the Yokohama Arena. Schilt’s 3rd WGP Championship in a row is unprecedented in K-1 history. The 34 year-old Pancrase style fighter also picked up a winner’s purse of $400,000.

K-1 WGP Final used the sport’s classic eight-man tournament format: Four first-bout winners advancing to a group of four fighters to the semifinals, those winners square off in the final. All bouts were fought under K-1 Rules, 3min x 3R, with up to two extra tiebreaker rounds.

The final between Schilt and Peter Aerts was the 3rd meeting between these two — Aerts won the first fight in Auckland in March of last year; Schilt took the second in the Championship bout at the WGP 2006 Final. The third meeting gave the opportunity for the fighters to decide the better man.

The fight began with Aerts moving in with overhand punches. Schilt backed Aerts off with low kicks, and went to the clinch when the distance closed. Schilt got his opponent into the corner and brought up the knee, but Aerts avoided it and found the distance to resume his stalking. Schilt got through a left straight punch that didn’t look very hard, but caught Aerts on the chin. As Aerts stumbled backward his right knee collapsed, and he fell down on the ring floor. The pain was too much, Aerts held his damaged knee and listened as he was counted out. Aerts could not get up and it was over. Schilt had won the Championship.
