And in front of 1,600 spectators at a packed Troxy, Luke Smith defeated the in-form Jay Gilbey to continue his impressive record in the sport.

Gilbey started brightly, setting the pace early on by holding and controlling Smith with a Thai clinch.

Smith, though, was unfazed and showed heart by breaking away from Gilby to finish the fight with a rear naked choke.

Smith, 26, said: "It wasn't really my style of fight but I still won. He started well and had control at the beginning. There wasn't much I could do as he was stronger than me so all I could do really was let him wear himself out and get an opportunity to go for it.

"I wanted to try and knock him out - that's what I like doing - but it wasn't to be. We both ended up on the ground and I gave him a naked rear choke and that was it.

"But I was pleased with the win, just not the way I won. I don't even mind losing if it's been a good fight. I like to entertain people and show what I can do."

He added: "There was an amazing atmosphere at the Troxy - that place was built for Cage Rage if you ask me. I felt like a gladiator. The last couple of fights have been decent atmospheres but this was something else."

The event at the Troxy was a feeder show for a contest at Wembley on Saturday week, July 14 which is being billed as: Cage Rage 22: Hard as Hell.

The opening fight of the Troxy show saw two young debutants - Giorgio Andrews and Max Henchy - take each other on.

This was to be a slightly scrappy bout with Andrews, the more technical fighter of the two, sealing victory.

In the next fight, "Baby Face" Mark Smith made quick work of Jody Cottham, winning just 53 seconds into the first round.

Scott Janason's meeting with Deano Durant was one of the most explosive fights of the night. Jansen was eventually declared triumphant.

Nick Porter then lost to Brett Bessett, before Smith took to the ring to dispose of Gilby.

Kym Farid scored a debut win against Soli Klichko with a fine display, while John Haggerty defeated Michael King to please his army of fans.

Jon Hathaway showed some excellent striking skills as he picked apart Tarcio Santana in a three-round execution, but out-of-form Dan Movahedi lost to Steven Dossett after a guillotine choke early in the first round.

Wesley Murch and Francis Hegany produced a techinal fight, trading submission attempts from the outset. Hegany sealed the win in the second round with a guillotine choke.

The most controversial fight of the night saw John Maguire's tussle with Jake Bostwick stopped early on after the latter gave the impression that he was in trouble - an error on the part of referee Grant Waterman. Maguire was awarded the win, with a possible rematch pencilled in for a later date.

Dorlan O'Mally worked his way past Robert Steadman-Powell, with Gaz Roriston looking in great shape as he controlled every aspect of his bout with Darren Guisha.

Finally, Che Mills showed his calibre by beating Afnan Saeed.
