Cage Fight Series: D-Day: Event Report by MMAUniverse.com Supremo George J. Poole
Event Title: Cage Fight Series: D-Day
Event Date: 12 May 2007
Event Venue: Trinity Park
Event Location: Ipswich
Date submitted: 16 May 2007
Submitted by: George J. Poole

The cage fighter series came to Ipswich for the 1st time and with that brought a great evening of action with a big card and some superb bouts with fighters coming from Spain, Czech Republic, Holland, Ireland, Wales, are own English fighters and with some last minute adjustments with the French camp making a no-show in came London based fighters Slipets Dmytro against Danny Hoyer & Nikalajus Cilkinas taking on Colin Laird.

The venue was very impressive and was well situated with the seating and ring access gave the evening a warm feel to it apart from the weather.

The action kicked off with special MC for the night, UFC Veteran Ian "The Machine" Freeman who should think about taking up a career in comedy as I was in stitches during the intervals & the three judges for the Night Alex Reid, Alan Lee and Pride fighter James "The Colossus" Thompson.

The first bout of the night saw Daniel Thomas taking on Jarred Fahre. Thomas pushed the fight with him gaining the clinch and using knees and several guillotine attempts in which he couldn’t fully apply to Fahre.

Fahre did put up a good fight and had some guillotine attempts of his own and was put into the a Matt Hughes style pin where he suffered a cut to his right eye through elbow strikes in round 2.

Round 3 starts with it going backward & forth standing up, Thomas lands a overhand right that connects and rocks Fahre and his applies a guillotine standing and gets Fahre to floor and taps early in the third round. Great heart showed by Fahre.

A first in the industry was a Cage boxing match which saw Alexis Rufus fight Shalina Roberts fight for the coveted CFS Women’s Title. This was a very entertaining bout with both utilizing their jab, but Rufus being more successful in the exchanges and get her a Unanimous decision and become the champ.

British ranked fighter Lee Doski entered the cage to take on Kevin Reed. The 1st round so both feeling each other out on the feet and the majority on the round spent against the cage, end of the round sees both men trading and Doski slowly getting through Reed’s guard, but Reed still full of confidence.

Round 2 sees reed’ charge Doski and go for a guillotine and is then picked up and slammed to the mat, from there Doski shows precision in his G&P game and stops Reed in 1m 30sec of the second round.

Fight of the night goes to Lautaro Arborelo v Vaclav Pribyl which saw endless takedowns by the Spaniard and a broken hand which was sustained early in the first round and him dominating the floor game, two knockdowns by Pribyl brought him back into the contest in which he almost ended the contest with a leg kick which connected to Arborelo’s right shoulder lucky enough and Arborelo recovering to receive a Unanimous decision.

In this The San Shou specialist Danny Hoyer from Holland made his debut in the cage for the first time and looked like he was at home. The replacement Dmytro couldn’t keep up with Hoyer’s fast accurate legs kicks and his relentless pace in which the fight ended early in the first round ala BJ Penn against Caol Uno with that quick flurry of punches that saw Grant Waterman step in and end the contest. Very impressive performance and a hot prospect for the future, Danny Hoyer.

A light-heavyweight bout saw the Irishman Tim McRory take on Florian Mueller who trains with new UFC fighter Dennis Siver in Germany and his submissions skills were showcased to a very standard as Mueller took a strong right hand in the opening seconds and clinched with McRory took his back and quick as you like applied a text book rear naked choke.

The talented Che Mills from Mark Weir’s camp in Gloucester took on Lautaro’s buddy & team-mate Oriol Gaset. Fight goes straight to the clinch with Che looking to edge the strength factor and landing a knee to the ribs which was later confirmed to be broken. Oriol had top position, but Che managed to turn the tables gain full mount with Oriol turning to his back and Che taking a submission victory by way of rear naked choke.

Every event comes with its share of controversy and this was no exception. This was one of the bouts that excited me on the card as it did the promoter’s Stuart & Tom.

Phil "Billy" Harris taking on Michal "Hasa" Hamrsmid. This looked to be building up nicely with Harris looking successful and composed in his striking and then was caught in a monster of a slam by the Czech that unfortunately split Harris head clean open and the blood flowing due to a cage fitting becoming exposed whilst up against the cage therefore the bout was halted and declared a No Contest which infuriated the Czech and was later discussed a rematch would take place at a future event.

The main event of the evening saw another fighter with a huge future ahead of him,  Jake Blyth taking on a veteran in the form of highly regarded Paul "Hands of Stone" Jenkins. The fight started with Jake managing to take Paul to the floor and gaining half guard where he inflicted punishment upon Jenkins through short elbows and striking and the fight was stopped by the doctor at the end of the first round due to a cut over the eye of Jenkins.

All in all a great event and a special thanks to Tom & Stuart for allowing me the opportunity to cover the event and getting a bit of a taste into the world of promoting and organising an event & you have a bright future ahead of you. You have my support with your ideas for the Cage Fight Series and MMA in general.
