Cage Fight Series: D-Day - Fight Sport Magazine's Event Report
Event Title: Cage Fight Series: D-Day
Event Date: 12 May 2007
Event Venue: Trinity Park
Event Location: Ipswich
Date submitted: 14 May 2007
Submitted by: Matthew Freeman
For a first show CFS put on a great night of entertainment at the Trinity Park complex in Ipswich. With a card that included some well known names such as Lee Doski, Paul Jenkins and Phillip Harris along with a number of European fighters, the event hosted exciting bouts from top to bottom. There were a number of stand out moments as young up and coming fighters showed great skills especially Holland’s Danny Hoyer, Germany’s Florian Muller and UK’s own Che Mills and Jake Blyth all of whom finished their fights explosively. Alongside the great fights CFS organisers keep the atmosphere lively with a Ring Girl tournament which for many was the icing on the cake of an impressive debut organisation.

Daniel Thomas vs Jahred Ferre

In a back and forth bout welterweights Daniel Thomas eventually submitted Jahred Ferre after a number of attempts at the guillotine. In the first Ferre tried to use his wrestling to dominate the fight but Thomas countered well and time again looked for the choke. As Ferre began to gas in the second Thomas started hunting his man getting mount position twice but unable to finish. Both came out swinging wildly in the third but with every shoot Thomas sunk the choke and at 2:13 of the round sunk the guillotine for the win.

Colin Laird vs Nikolajus Silkinas

Ireland’s Colin Laird took the majority decision over the tough Ukrainian Nikolajus Silkinas in another wrestler versus grappler classic. With Silkinas throwing some heavy punches as Laird tried to shoot in the first it looked as if the Irishman would be beaten down but he showed great composure to use his grappling and control his opponent. The second saw Laird attempt a number of submissions and though Silkinas escaped Laird regained control to finish the round with a huge slam into side control where he landed a number of knees. The third saw Laird slam his opponent early but a game Silkinas kept on punching only to be slammed again at the end to give Laird the win by decision.

A very calm Lee Doski showed his cage experience weathering the strong attacks of Kevin Reed in round one to take control and the win. Reed rushed the Tsunami fighter early and controlled the clinch for a number of minutes landing some hurtful body shots. Doski managed to land some combinations after a restart and the round ended with both men trading fire. Reed charged again in the second and looked for a standing guillotine but Doski tripped him and began landing heavy shots for the win by GnP at 1:40 of R2.

Lautaro Aborelo vs Vaclou Pribyl

In a real war Spain’s Lautaro Aborelo went three rounds with Czech Vaclou Pribyl but took the win with a solid display of grappling though Pribyl was always looking for the knock out. Lautaro shot in again and again getting some heavy slams and mounting the Czech early. Pribyl dropped the Spaniard after a restart with a devastating straight right but Lautaro recovered to the next round. In the second the fight was played out on the mat as Lautaro used side control to damage Pribyl with elbows and diving ounches. In the third Lautaro kept up his tactic of shooting and taking mount but Pribyl held on well and after a stand up again dropped the Spaniard and hunted for the win. But in the end the decision was unanimous giving the win to Lautaro.

Danny Hoyer vs Dmytro Slipets

Danny Hoyer dominated Dmytro Slipets taking the win in the first round via submission. Punishing his opponent in the stand up with leg kicks and punches to the body Hoyer also controlled the grappling side of the match. Slipets shot in for the take down but Hoyer scrambled well and landed a flurry of hammerfists forcing his opponent to try to escape. The Dutchman then took his opportunity to sink in the guillotine choke for the tap out at 3:33 of R1.

Light-Heavyweight Florian Muller also impressed with his great submission skills against Ireland’s Tim McCrory. After a brief period of feeling out both unloaded with bombs with Muller’s connecting heavily. McCrory then tried to shoot but the German sprawled well and turned his opponent to sink the the RNC in just 34 seconds of R1. Muller displayed spectacular speed and strength to take the win over a game McCrory and is definitely a name to look out for.

Spain’s Vale Tudo practitioner Oriol Gaset Gimeno was completely out classed by a dangerous looking Che Mills. Looking very big for a welterweight Mills, trained by Mark Weir, showed great power totally controlling the clinch and landing damaging shots in close. As Gimeno tried to escape Mills’ dominant hold both fell awkwardly, allowing Mills to take his opponents back and sink the RNC in 1:22 of R1.

Phillip Harris vs Michal Hamrsmid

In what looked to be a great bout Phillip Harris’ fight against Czech Michal Hamrsmid was ruled a no contest after the UK man was slammed into the fence and sustained a gash to the back of the head. Hopefully a re-match will be arranged as both looked evenly matched at the weight.

In the headliner Paul Jenkins took on the young, undefeated Jake Blyth in a Middleweight contest. Aware of Jenkins’ hands of stone, Blyth got the take down from the clinch and kept the fight on the mat for the duration. Working into the mount and then side control Blyth began dropping nasty elbows as Jenkind tried to hold on. Using short elbows to the head and body shots Blyth controlled the round and cut Jenkins badly on the eyebrow and forehead to force the stoppage at the bell of R1. Proving the experience of the Welshman was not intimidating Blyth looked strong and explosive, employing a good game plan to take the victory convincingly.
