It was as close to defeat as he had been in a long time, but in the end Pride heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko still pulled out a victory over Mark Hunt New Year’s Eve in Saitama, Japan’s Saitama Super Arena.

Hunt is a former K-1 kickboxing star with a concrete head and it didn’t take long for Fedor to take him to the ground. The champion then quickly mounted Hunt and worked himself into position to take a straight arm bar on.

Fedor swung his legs around to finish the hold but Hunt did not allow Fedor’s right leg to come fully over his head as it would need to in order to lock out the arm. Hunt then turned into Fedor and forced the Russian to work for the arm from his back.

But where as Fedor had little trouble finishing an arm bar from his back in his last fight against Mark Coleman, he could not get the last few inches of position to do so against Hunt.

Still working and clasping Hunt’s arm, Fedor turned on to his own stomach and posted on his head and finally managed to extend Hunt’s arm. It looked like Hunt would have to call it a night at any moment or get his arm broken. But instead he worked a text book move, walking over Fedor’s upper body and remove his arm from immediate danger while landing on the side of his foe.

Now the champion was on the defensive as Hunt worked his own offense on the ground. Since they were near the ropes the referee moved them to the center of the ring and restarted the action on the ground. Fedor eventually escaped the position and got back to his feet.

But Hunt soon took Fedor down and regained the side mount position. From there Hunt threatened with an Americana shoulder lock, not once, but twice. Fedor somehow withstood the torque pressure on his left arm and escaped, once again getting to his feet.

Now, late in the 10-minute first round, Fedor went on the attack and brought Hunt down to the ground on his own terms. Fedor attained the same side mount position Hunt had on him twice before earlier in the fight. But from there, Fedor’s attacks were far more effective.
Fedor was soon working Hunt’s left arm into position for a Kimura shoulder lock, and once he had it secure he was able to make Hunt tap out with seconds left in the round. Emelianenko moved to 25-1 and Hunt dropped to 5-3 in MMA.

In other Pride action New Year’s Eve, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira won his rematch over Josh Barnett with a three round decision victory, lightweight champion Takanori Gomi defeated number one contender Mitsuhiro Ishida by TKO in the first round, and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua defeated Kazuhiro Nakamura by decision.
