One of the best things about this show is the friendships and the obvious respect that the fighters have for each other. Dana was smart and decided that all of the fighters will remain in the house regardless of whether they win or lose. One would think as a fighter, it would be hard to come back in to the house knowing that you lost. I think that this is where a lesson can be learned by the newer fans of the sport. It is a job and that's what they do for a living. Win or lose at the end of the day it's just a job.
Funny to see that Shonie keeps a journal and even funnier that he left it out and open. Team Mojo's entire fight match-ups were listed and the team made sure that the journal made it back upstairs with Shonie. Chris Lytle and Matt Serra ribbed him a little about it, but were absolutely certain it was just a mistake by Carter.
Charles McCarthy is a nervous wreck. He was visibly shaken by the uncertainty of when and who is we going to fight. The rest of the house could sense it and I was sure he was going to be picked as the opponent for Team Mojo's fighter.
In training, Georges St. Pierre was disappointed that Team No Love took the day off. They all said that they needed time to recover and I could see how they would. Just not in week 2 for Pete's sake. I think that if I was a fighter on the comeback trail, I would definitely welcome the opportunity to train with the talented people they brought in.
The fight announcements came and Shonie Carter stole the show. He called out Charles McCarthy in his best singing voice and McCarthy looked very nervous and a little scared. Shonie then sang out that Charles was not the opponent and had to do it twice to get McCarthy to step back in line so he could call out the real opponent from the team. Gideon Ray was called out by Team Mojo to face Edwin Dewees. I thought this was a solid and good match-up for Team Mojo and an unfavourable one for Team No Love.
I love the flashbacks to their UFC fights. It gives such insight to the newer fans and reminds us older ones of where they came from. Gideon's reflect his losses to Swick and Loiseau, while Edwin's reflect his to Rich Franklin and Chris Leben.
During this fight Edwin showed me that he had improved greatly over the past
6 months. He basically dominated the first round with good jiu jitsu positioning and control coupled with good ground and pound. Gideon looked visibly concerned when he got back to his corner. I did like Ray's heart and he showed a lot of it in the second round. Gideon lands a slicing elbow that cuts Dewees open with one of the most bloody cuts I have ever seen. The amazing part about it is that he landed it from the bottom. Dewees literally had blood pouring out of his head like it was a faucet turned down low. At the end of the second round he was a bloody mess and Herb Dean had to have the cut checked by the physician at ringside. Dana announced that it was one round a piece so they were headed in to sudden victory.
The third round was pretty much all Dewees. Despite his excessive bleeding he was dominating. Gideon was dodging the stream of blood squirting from his head and you could tell it was bothering him. All of the blood was making any submission attempts pretty much useless. At the end of the round it was obvious that Edwin had pulled it out.
Winner: Edwin Dewees
Gideon earned a lot of respect from his team and deservedly so. He showed that he did have a lot of heart and that he could bring it for all three rounds.
This week was a good episode and I hope that the show can keep up the great fighting so that the ratings remain favourable for the UFC and Spike TV. We need a season 5!
