They call him “The Zen Machine”. In a strange way, it’s very fitting. Mario Sperry has never been the type of guy who is out to prove something. Intelligent and methodical, his fights are a study in disciplined aggression. He simply keeps advancing until he reaches the point of victory.

But beyond his career in the ring, Sperry’s greatest impact may have come in the gyms, where he took some of Brazil’s best jiu-jitsu practitioners and turned them into MMA fighters.

When you talk about pioneers in this sport, it’s hard not to talk about Sperry. He was a founding father of Brazilian Top Team, which produced some of the best fighters in the game.

His training techniques helped many of his countrymen make the successful transition to MMA, and he’s never flagged in his effort to help athletes evolve along with the sport.

But one of Sperry’s most memorable moments came in a losing effort that went unseen by most of MMA’s modern fan base.

The year was 1995, and Sperry had entered the first edition of the Extreme Fighting 1 tournament in Wilmington, North Carolina. Despite his prodigious career in jiu-jitsu tournaments, Sperry had only one previous MMA bout to his credit. He’d never fought in the U.S. before, but found success early in the night when he submitted his first opponent easily.

In the final round of the tournament, however, Sperry came up against a little-known Russian fighter by the name of Igor Zinoviev. At first it looked as though Sperry would be able to put his submission skills to work as easily as he had in his first match, but Zinoviev managed one escape after another, earning him the nickname “Houdini”.

It took all of eleven minutes for the bout to be settled, and though Sperry came out on the losing end it was a glimpse into the future of mixed martial arts. No longer was it simply one style of fighting against another. The need to know everything, to become a complete fighter, could not be ignored.

That’s exactly what Sperry did. What’s more, he used his role within Brazilian Top Team to maximize the potential of fighters who were once simply jiu-jitsu specialists. His training techniques and focus on strategy made them one of Brazil’s most dominant fight camps.

Now Sperry brings a team that is all his own, his World Class Fight Center, into the IFL. The first member of his team, Marcello Salazar, has already tasted success in the league, winning a decision over England’s Alex Cook on the International Fight League: 2007 World Grand Prix Finals undercard, avenging the only loss of his career in the process.

How Sperry’s team will match up against those of other MMA camps remain to be seen, but they’ll get their first test when they take on Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas on Feb. 29.

That’s when we’ll find out whether “The Zen Machine” and the fighters who compete under his flag have truly evolved with the sport, or whether they’ve still got some learning to do.
